Yesterday I was walking through the woods in malibu canyon with my dog, Bridget. (See my photos, if you want to contemplate utter cuteness) While following her leashlessly curious nose through acreage forest terrain, of we came upon a praying mantis, who, as it turns out, also came upon us. I moved in to examine this intricate and beautiful green biomechanism up close. The mantis turned her head and stared at back, examining me. We stood, eyes to eyes, locked in a communication of turning our heads and licking our limbs. I was wearing my long hair up in a vertical ponytail, which bifurkated at the top, giving the appearance of antennae (and, in my mind, the function of antennae as well...:) The mantis seemed doubly intrigued at my antannae, twisting her own to aim at them. Back and forth, we sent a flow of messages of love and compassion and beauty. Then I sat down to meditate. The curious insect leaped into my hair, making a home inside my mop top. After meditating, the three of us walked through the woods together. The sounds of buzzing permeated throughout the landscape of trees, houses, animals, bugs. I couldn't help but wonder how the sound of man made buzzing, electric generators, phone lines, lawn mowers, added to the symphony of nature. Do our planetary neighbors enjoy the the inadvertant sounds of our technology? Does it add harmony to their day, or does it add dissidence?
When we arrived back at my car, we all sat inside together. I turned on the radio, which was playing a cd of my own home made music. The mantis started grooving back and forth, doing her own version of the funky robot. I smiled and started dancing along with her.
Whatever buzzing the rest of the world brings, me and ms. mantis were in harmonius agreement with the music at hand.
She then crawled inside my ear and has yet to come out.
